![]() This has its own set of risks in not running the current stable version.Īs mentioned, upgrading our Word Press sites is a breeze, also upgrading our separate Support, Ticket system is a breeze too - so why is it so cumbersome to upgrade Moodle? With the above reasons and the possible risks of manual copies etc, then we are loathe to upgrade every version and usually we skip 3-4 versions before doing an upgrade. That also means that we are offline for those 6 hours - and plus we have 2 sites, so about 12 hours all up. that includes doing the copying, uploading etc. ![]() ![]() Due to the size and number of the files, it takes us maybe about 6 hours per site to do an upgrade. Why can't we do the same as what WordPress does and have the upgrades come from a specific Moodle source site - that way we know we are getting the current version.Īnother issue is the time it takes. The second issue, is that the upgrades occur with a file set that we supply from one of our local drives. As i said, recopying the added and extra block, mods, plugins etc can be very cumbersome - especially when navigating the directory structure (to make certain that you copy them back in the same place). The main issue is the number of manual tasks associated with doing the upgrades. I understand Moodle is a big and complicated package and it does a lot, but to put this in perspective, we also administer a number of word press sites and upgrades to those are just a click of a button and it is all done automatically - within 30 seconds at the most. ![]() This means our Production sites are basically offline for half a day while we are doing this. Lets expand on this, for the moodle upgrade, we have to copy the existing files (to back them up) and then upload the whole new file set, then copy the config file back over, then manually re-copy all the added blocks, mods filters etc (and this is a problematic process in navigating the directory structure). ![]() We've just done the upgrade to v3 on our 2 Moodle sites and the common questions always get asked - why is it so hard to upgrade moodle? ![]()
